1.Preheat oven to 180°C (160°C fan-forced).
2.Combine dates, water and soda in bowl, cover, stand overnight.
3.Grease a deep 19cm square cake pan, line base with paper; grease paper well.
4.Cream butter and sugar in small bowl with electric mixer until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs one at a time, beat until combined. Transfer mixture to large bowl, stir in half the sifted flours and half the undrained date mixture, then stir in remaining flours and date mixture. Spread into prepared pan. Bake for about 1¼ hours. Stand 5 minutes before turning on to wire rack to cool.
