Ingredients

Fluffy frosting

Method

1.Grease two 20cm x 30cm lamington pans, line bases with baking paper. Using three packets, prepare cake mix according to directions; divide between prepared pans. Bake in moderate oven for about 40 minutes; turn onto wire racks to cool.
2.Using paper pattern, cut out skull from one cake. Cut out eight 2cm rounds for ends of bones and four rectangles for bones from remaining cake.
3.Make fluffy frosting. Combine sugar and the water in small saucepan; stir with a wooden spoon over high heat, without boiling, until sugar dissolves. Boil, uncovered, without stirring, about 3 to 5 minutes or until syrup is slightly thick. While the syrup is boiling, beat the egg whites in a small bowl with an electric mixer until stiff. When syrup is ready, allow the bubbles to subside then pour a very thin stream onto the egg whites with mixture operating on medium speed. Continue until all syrup is used.
4.Position cake pieces on board, join with a little frosting. Cover cake pieces with remaining frosting.
5.Using red colouring, mark lines in shell halves for veins, place a Smartie in the centre. Cut out nose from the licorice strap and place on face. Cut bullets in half lengthways and place on cake for teeth.

Cut out skull from one cake using pattern as a guide; cut out rounds and rectangles from remaining cake. Position cake pieces on the board, making crossbones with cake rectangles and rounds
